Why Do We Import Japanese Cars?

Japanese-sourced cars are often well-maintained, low-mileage vehicles due to Japan's strict Shaken inspection system, high depreciation rates, and limited private sales. The rigorous biennial Shaken test, starting after a vehicle's first three years, ensures thorough safety and emissions checks, resulting in cars with excellent condition, minimal rust, and high specifications compared to UK equivalents.

How is mileage verified?

All Mendip Autoserves cars undergo JEVIC mileage checks in Japan before export and ten BIMTA mileage checks once registered in the UK. Certified mileage is recorded with the DVLA and DVSA, ensuring accuracy and transparency.

Are service records available?

All our cars come with service histories, typically from main dealers in Japan. Due to the limited space in Japan, there is a low presence of independent repairers.

Are the cars UK-compliant?

Yes, all our cars are adapted for UK use:
Odometers: Converted to MPH using OEM-spec dials, indistinguishable from UK models.
Radio frequencies: Recoded from Japan's 75-95 MHz to the European 87.5-108 MHz FM bandwidth.
Navigation is reprogrammed to Western Europe using the latest software and mapping.

How are the cars registered in the UK?

Our dedicated team registers all vehicles with the DVLA through BIMTA (British Independent Motor Trade Association), a recognised UK trade body. Accurate data is shared with insurers, enabling premiums based on equivalent UK-supplied models.

Why are these cars exported from Japan?

Japan's strict vehicle inspections, high depreciation, and cultural preference for frequent car turnover create a robust supply of affordable, well-maintained vehicles. Low private sales and dealer incentives, including favourable finance rates, channel these cars into auctions for export.
